Document 2 | Villa Design Development | The Koi Fractal

Client: Middle-aged Japanese actress, Mrs Ueda, decided to recreate and relive memories from her past holidays in Ibiza together with her children. Ibiza seems like the perfect place as a family receptor since everyone is scattered in multiple places all over the world and Ibiza is one of the midpoints between them, heavily preferred for the sentimental times they’ve spent there together.

Considering her discipline and grace that she practices throughout her career, the koi bears multiple symbols to the actress which also influences her lifestyle. That being said, the movements and anatomy of fishes and the koi in particular were studied to gain a better understanding of what could possibly inform the design of her villa.

Upon closer observation of how koi’s go about their daily lives, it really appeared as if they were calmly and gracefully enjoying their time within their cool home. With that thought in mind, wouldn’t it be interesting to try and emulate this living condition within a vacation villa so that it influences its inhabitants to be calm and still graceful, just like a koi fish? It seemed like a perfect fit for Mrs Ueda who, as an actress, still needs to maintain a certain poise even when she is within a home, moreover in shared spaces.

With some rough ideas about how a form could look like, physical experimentation were conducted to understand how to replicate a physical model in the 3D realm.

The four different parts are segregated according to the everyday use of Mrs Ueda: 1] Personal space, 2] Work space, 3] Shared Space and 4] Other’s Personal Space (From top to bottom).

Moving on from the space programme rationale, an attempt to understand the possible structures for the building were then conducted using physical models. Each space/building were designed using the inspiration of the koi scales.

Various scale structures, each having different sizes according to the function of activities intended.

The next step would be to carry on with this play of copper to try and see if it can turn into golden architecture.
